BUYERS GUIDE
The Ultimate Shipping Container Buyer’s Guide
Buying a shipping container is an important investment. At Northpark Containers, we believe customers should have clear information about container condition, sizing, delivery requirements, and quality standards before making a purchase.
Whether you need a container for storage, a workshop, a construction project, transportation, or a future conversion, this guide will help you understand the most important factors to consider when selecting the right container for your needs.
1. Understanding Container Grades
Shipping containers are available in different conditions and grades. Understanding the differences can help you choose a container that fits your intended use and budget.
One-Trip / New Containers
Condition: Manufactured overseas and generally transported to the United States as part of their initial cargo voyage before being offered for sale.
Best For: Residential and commercial conversions, long-term storage, offices, workshops, retail projects, and applications where appearance and condition are important.
What to Expect:
- Minimal signs of use
- Clean interior
- Original factory flooring, where applicable
- Functional doors and locking hardware
- Strong structural condition
- Factory-applied paint with minimal cosmetic imperfections
Although commonly referred to as “new” or “one-trip” containers, minor cosmetic variations may occur as a result of manufacturing, transportation, handling, or storage.
Cargo Worthy (CW)
Condition: Used containers that meet applicable structural and operational requirements for cargo transportation when properly inspected and certified.
Best For: International transportation, heavy-duty storage, industrial applications, and projects where structural integrity is a priority.
What to Expect:
- Structurally sound construction
- Functional doors and locking mechanisms
- Suitable for applicable cargo transportation when properly certified
- Possible dents, scratches, surface rust, and other signs of previous use
Cargo Worthy status does not mean the container is cosmetically perfect.
Wind & Watertight (WWT)
Condition: Used containers selected and inspected for general storage applications where the cargo interior is expected to be protected from ordinary wind and water intrusion.
Best For: Residential and commercial storage, workshops, agricultural applications, construction sites, and general-purpose storage.
What to Expect:
- Possible dents and scratches
- Surface rust consistent with age and prior use
- Normal signs of previous use
- Functional doors and locking mechanisms
- Interior generally suitable for storage
- Inspection for significant holes or openings
Northpark Containers may perform a visual inspection of WWT units before dispatch, including a light test where appropriate, to help identify potential openings or areas requiring attention.
WWT containers are used containers and should not be expected to have the same cosmetic condition as One-Trip containers.
2. Choosing the Right Container Size
The right container size depends on your intended use, available property space, storage requirements, budget, and delivery access.
Common container sizes include:
| Container Type | Approx. Exterior Dimensions | Approx. Maximum Payload* |
|---|---|---|
| 20ft Standard | 20′ × 8′ × 8’6″ | Up to approximately 62,000 lbs |
| 40ft Standard | 40′ × 8′ × 8’6″ | Up to approximately 59,000 lbs |
| 40ft High Cube | 40′ × 8′ × 9’6″ | Up to approximately 63,000 lbs |
*Payload capacity varies by manufacturer, container model, tare weight, construction, and applicable transportation requirements. Always confirm the specifications of the specific container being purchased before relying on a stated payload capacity.
20ft Containers
A 20ft container is often a practical choice when property space is limited or a moderate amount of storage is required.
It can be suitable for:
- Household storage
- Equipment and tools
- Construction materials
- Small workshops
- Agricultural storage
- Business inventory
40ft Containers
A 40ft container provides approximately twice the floor length of a 20ft container and is commonly selected for larger storage requirements, commercial inventory, equipment, and conversion projects.
40ft High Cube Containers
A 40ft High Cube container provides approximately one additional foot of exterior height compared with a standard-height container.
The additional height can be particularly useful for:
- Container-home conversions
- Offices
- Workshops
- Studios
- Finished interiors
- Insulation and ceiling systems
- Electrical and mechanical installations
When converting a container into a finished space, the additional interior clearance can provide valuable flexibility after accounting for insulation, flooring, ceiling finishes, and other installations.
3. Site Preparation & Delivery Requirements
Proper site preparation is one of the most important parts of purchasing a shipping container.
Northpark Containers commonly uses specialized commercial delivery equipment, including tilt-bed trailers, which requires sufficient access, ground stability, and clearance.
Ground Surface
The delivery area should be:
- Firm and stable
- Reasonably level or appropriately graded
- Well-drained
- Capable of supporting the container and delivery equipment
Potentially suitable surfaces may include:
- Gravel
- Concrete
- Asphalt
- Firm, compacted earth
Soft, muddy, unstable, or excessively sloped ground may prevent safe delivery.
Straight-Line Clearance
Adequate space is required for the delivery truck and trailer to access the property and position the container.
As a general guideline:
- 20ft container: Approximately 60 feet of straight-line clearance may be required
- 40ft container: Approximately 100 feet of straight-line clearance may be required
These measurements are approximate and can vary depending on the delivery equipment, property layout, terrain, road conditions, and specific placement requirements.
Overhead Clearance
Approximately 14 feet of vertical clearance is recommended along the delivery route.
Customers should check for potential obstructions, including:
- Utility lines
- Tree branches
- Building overhangs
- Fences
- Gates
- Signs
- Other structures
Customers are responsible for confirming that the delivery route and placement area are accessible and free of obstructions.
For additional information, customers should review our Shipping & Delivery Policy before placing an order.
4. The Northpark Containers Quality Inspection
We understand that customers want to know what they are purchasing before the container arrives.
Where applicable, containers scheduled for delivery may undergo a quality inspection before dispatch. The inspection focuses on key components relevant to the container’s intended use and represented condition.
1. Floor Condition
The container floor is inspected for visible damage, deterioration, and other conditions that may affect its intended use.
Container flooring may consist of marine-grade plywood or another manufacturer-specified flooring material. Flooring specifications can vary by container manufacturer, model, age, and construction.
2. Doors & Gaskets
Doors, hinges, locking mechanisms, and rubber door seals are inspected for proper operation and visible condition.
3. Locking Rods & Hardware
Locking rods, handles, hinges, and related hardware are checked for proper operation. Lubrication may be applied when appropriate.
4. Structural Components
Major structural areas, including exterior walls, corner posts, and other visible structural components, are inspected for significant damage or deformation that could affect the container’s intended use.
5. Roof Condition
The roof is inspected for significant damage, openings, corrosion, or other visible conditions that could compromise the container’s intended storage function.
The scope of inspection may vary depending on the container’s age, grade, condition, and intended use. An inspection is not a guarantee that every defect or condition will be identified.
5. Understanding Container Condition
Used shipping containers naturally show signs of their previous use.
Depending on the container’s grade and age, customers may encounter:
- Minor dents
- Scratches
- Surface rust
- Paint fading
- Paint variations
- Small cosmetic imperfections
- Floor discoloration or wear
- Minor door or hardware wear
These characteristics do not necessarily indicate a structural defect or failure of the container to meet its represented condition.
If appearance is particularly important for your project, we recommend considering a One-Trip container or contacting our team before purchase to discuss available inventory.
6. Free Standard Shipping & Transparent Pricing
Northpark Containers aims to make the purchasing process straightforward and transparent.
Free Standard Shipping
Eligible container orders include free standard shipping within the contiguous United States (Lower 48 states).
Standard Delivery Generally Includes
For eligible orders, standard shipping generally includes:
- The container
- Standard transportation
- Standard delivery
- Standard off-loading
Free standard shipping does not necessarily include special equipment, difficult-access delivery, extended placement, crane services, re-delivery, storage, or other non-standard services.
If special delivery arrangements are required, Northpark Containers will communicate applicable additional charges before payment is completed whenever reasonably possible.
7. Delivery Timeline
The typical estimated delivery timeframe for eligible orders is approximately 4–10 business days following order confirmation.
This may include:
- Order processing
- Container assignment
- Inspection and preparation
- Carrier scheduling
- Transportation
- Delivery coordination
Delivery times are estimates and are not guaranteed unless a specific delivery date has been expressly confirmed in writing.
Actual delivery timing may be affected by:
- Customer location
- Carrier availability
- Weather
- Road conditions
- Transportation schedules
- Site accessibility
- Holidays
- Other logistical circumstances
For complete information, customers should review our Shipping & Delivery Policy.
8. Container Placement & Site Responsibility
Northpark Containers delivers containers to the customer’s designated delivery location using the available delivery method appropriate for the order.
Customers are responsible for determining where the container should be placed and ensuring that the selected area is suitable.
Before delivery, customers should:
- Prepare the placement area
- Clear the delivery route
- Remove obstacles
- Confirm adequate access
- Confirm overhead clearance
- Confirm ground stability
- Provide gate or access information
- Obtain any necessary permits or property approvals
Customers are also responsible for determining whether the property is suitable for the intended use of the container.
If a site cannot be safely accessed or the container cannot be delivered because of site conditions, the delivery may need to be rescheduled and additional charges may apply.
9. Our 30-Day Structural Guarantee
Northpark Containers stands behind the containers we supply and provides a 30-Day Structural Guarantee for eligible units, subject to the applicable terms, conditions, and exclusions.
The guarantee is intended to address qualifying structural issues or material water-intrusion concerns that are inconsistent with the container’s represented condition and that are reported within 30 days following delivery.
If you believe your container has a qualifying issue, contact us promptly and provide:
- Your order number
- A description of the issue
- Clear photographs or video where appropriate
- Any relevant delivery documentation
After reviewing the circumstances, Northpark Containers will determine the appropriate resolution based on the applicable guarantee terms.
Depending on the nature and circumstances of the issue, an appropriate resolution may include:
- Repair
- Replacement
- Exchange
- Partial refund
- Another mutually agreed resolution
The guarantee does not necessarily cover normal wear, cosmetic imperfections, customer modifications, misuse, improper installation or placement, accidents, or conditions caused after delivery.
For complete terms, customers should refer to the applicable warranty or guarantee documentation associated with their purchase.
10. Buying a Container for Conversion
If you plan to convert your container into a home, office, workshop, studio, retail space, or other finished structure, consider the following before purchasing:
Height
A High Cube container can provide additional interior clearance for insulation, flooring, ceilings, electrical systems, ductwork, and other installations.
Condition
One-Trip containers are often preferred for conversion projects where appearance and condition are important.
Structural Modifications
Cutting doors, windows, openings, or other sections of a container can affect its structural integrity and may require additional reinforcement.
Building Requirements
Container conversions may be subject to local building codes, zoning requirements, permits, utility requirements, foundation requirements, and other regulations.
Customers are responsible for determining and complying with the requirements applicable to their property and intended use.
11. Questions to Ask Before You Buy
Before purchasing a shipping container, consider:
What will I use it for?
Storage, transportation, workshop, construction, agriculture, conversion, or another purpose?
What size do I need?
Consider both the amount of storage required and the space available on your property.
What condition is appropriate?
One-Trip, Cargo Worthy, and WWT containers serve different purposes.
Can the container be delivered to my property?
Check access, ground conditions, overhead clearance, turning requirements, and placement space.
Do I need a High Cube?
If you plan a conversion or need additional vertical clearance, a High Cube may be worth considering.
Do I need permits?
Local requirements can vary significantly. Check with the appropriate local authorities before placing the container.
How will I use the container after delivery?
Consider foundations, leveling, drainage, security, ventilation, insulation, electrical work, plumbing, and other improvements based on your intended use.
